Lesson 9 of 12 · 24 min

Painting light with white paper

Plan and protect your whites, then paint around them to make a small study glow.

Lesson notes

  1. Watercolour has no white paint. Every highlight is paper you decided to save, so we map them before the first wash.
  2. Light a simple object from one side and paint the shadow shape, not the object. The form appears on its own.
  3. Masking fluid is optional. We show a version without it, using clean edges and patience.
