Lesson 10 of 12 · 26 min

Skies and distance

A graded sky, soft clouds and three planes of hills that fade into the haze.

Lesson notes

  1. A graded sky is a flat wash with one change: more water at the horizon. We do it in a single pass.
  2. Distance is lighter, cooler and softer. Three planes of hills, each a little warmer and darker than the last, make a landscape.
  3. Lift clouds with a damp, thirsty brush, then stop. The urge to fiddle with clouds is strong.
