Lesson 7 of 12 · 20 min

Seeing values in three tones

Squint, simplify and plan a painting in light, middle and dark before touching colour.

Lesson notes

  1. Colour gets the attention, but value carries the picture. A photo in greyscale shows whether a composition will work.
  2. We make a three-tone thumbnail in one colour, about the size of a playing card, in under five minutes.
  3. Keep the darkest dark to one area. It will pull the eye to exactly where you want it.
