Lesson 1 of 12 · 14 min

Meet your materials

Paper, pigment, brushes and water: what each one does and what is actually worth paying for.

Lesson notes

  1. Cold-press cotton paper at 300gsm (140lb) takes water without buckling. We tape a quarter sheet to a board so it dries flat.
  2. A round size 8 with a good point does most of the work in this course. Lena shows a ten-second test for any brush.
  3. Set out six colours in a row and label them. Knowing where each pigment lives saves guessing later.
