Lesson 3 of 12 · 22 min

Wet-on-wet and the bloom

Drop colour into a damp wash, learn when blooms are a gift and when they are a mistake.

Lesson notes

  1. Wet-on-wet works inside a narrow window. Too wet and colour floods; too dry and it leaves hard edges.
  2. A bloom (or cauliflower) happens when wetter paint enters a drier area. We make one on purpose, then prevent one.
  3. Practise on a strip of six squares, each a little drier than the last, and label them. This chart becomes your reference.
